Frequently asked questions
How do I know you're the right company for the job?
We actively encourage prospective clients to research as much as possible. We have many pictures and testimonials of our work available on this website for you to view, and more on request. We can also provide phone numbers for previous clients who are happy to talk to you about their experience.
How can I cover my Artex?
Depending on where the Artex is, depends on which method to use. Ceilings are either plaster boarded over the top and skimmed or if it's only a light pattern, it can be scraped and skimmed. Walls are similar to ceilings but instead of over boarding, they can be prepared with a backing plaster and then skimmed to provide a perfectly smooth finish.
Can I do anything to prepare the room and reduce my costs?
Yes, simple little things will all help to reduce the time we need to spend on the job. Here are a few examples of what you could do before we attend. Sheeting/protection of floors, all furniture removed, wallpaper stripped, easy access to fresh cold water and power. If you feel confident enough you could remove radiators, tiles, kitchen units and bathroom suites.
Can you complete my kitchen/bathroom without me needing to get other trades people?
Yes we can. Although we are only a small business, we are multi-disciplined and carry out the majority of trades ourselves. We use regular sub-contractors for any gas or electric work that we may come across.
Will I need to move out when my bathroom is being replaced?
No, we always leave our clients with a functioning toilet at the end of each working day. Although you may be without a bath/shower for a day or two depending on the scope of work required.
Do I need a certificate when I have a wall removed?
It depends if the wall is load bearing or not. If it is, then you will need building control approval from your local council or a private company who carry out building inspections. We can liaise with the inspectors on your behalf or you could organise this yourself. Generally, you would need to provide them with a structural engineers calculation, for the beam/lintel you require for the new opening. They would then make a site visit, before the beam/lintel is plastered over and again when the work is complete. You will then receive a completion certificate, which you would need if you came to sell the property in the future.
When can my new plaster be painted/decorated over?
Many factors decide when the plaster is ready and this can vary dramatically. Generally, the drying out process of plaster takes 7-10 days. During the process, it will go from dark brown to a light pink colour.
How do I 'seal' the new plaster?
We recommend using white matt emulsion watered down around 50:50 and then apply a mist coat by brush or roller. Don't worry if it's patchy, it just needs to cover the whole area to reduce the initial suction. This will help your top coats to adhere better and give a greater finish.
